The Awakening Within

The Awakening Within

A lady meditating alone in nature at sunrise
Reading Time: 2 minutes

There was a time when every day felt like a race to nowhere for Kavya. Deadlines, emails, meetings — the noise outside matched the noise within. She would wake up already exhausted, drift through tasks on autopilot, and lie awake at night wondering where the day had gone.

One evening, burnt out and restless, Kavya found herself scrolling mindlessly through her phone when she stumbled upon a short video: a monk sitting cross-legged under a tree, eyes closed, breath steady. Something in his stillness drew her in. She replayed it three times.

The next morning, instead of rushing to check emails, she sat cross-legged on her living room floor. No incense, no chanting — just her, her breath, and a shaky attempt at silence. For five minutes, she tried to watch her breath come and go. Her mind fought back with lists and worries, but when she opened her eyes, something was different. She felt a moment of calm she hadn’t tasted in years.

Curious, she started reading about mindfulness. She learned how simply noticing each moment — the warmth of her tea, the softness of her blanket, the sound of birds outside—could anchor her to a present she’d been too busy to live in.

Weeks turned to months. She began waking up ten minutes earlier to sit in quiet stillness. She brought the same awareness to her walks, her conversations, even her cooking. She learned to pause before reacting, to listen deeply, and to forgive herself when old patterns pulled her back into the chaos.

One rainy afternoon, stuck in traffic, Kavya realised she no longer felt angry at the jam. She watched raindrops slide down her window, noticing how each drop merged with another. The world slowed down — or maybe she had.

Her friends noticed too. She laughed more, listened better, and carried a lightness that drew people in. When asked what changed, she would smile and say, “Nothing. And everything.”

Years later, Kavya still faced busy days and moments of overwhelm. But somewhere inside, a quiet sanctuary waited for her — a place built breath by breath, moment by moment. A place she could return to anytime, anywhere.

It was, she realised, the awakening within — the silent reminder that peace isn’t something you find. It’s something you remember.
