High above the mango tree, every bird was getting ready to fly south for the winter.

“Everyone goes,” chirped the sparrows. “That’s just what we do.”

Little Gulli was excited for his first big journey. But then he found his friend Tuni on a low branch, her wing bent and hurting.

“I can’t fly,” she said softly. “Will everyone forget me if I stay behind?”

Gulli looked at the sky, full of wings flying away. Then he looked at Tuni.

“I won’t forget you,” he said. “I’ll stay too.”

All winter, Gulli found seeds for both of them and kept Tuni warm beside him on the branch.

One cold evening, a little boy at the window below scattered some rice on his balcony and whispered, “That’s for the birds who didn’t fly away.”

Gulli felt warm inside. He wasn’t the only one who remembered to be kind.

When spring came, Tuni’s wing was strong again. She flew the whole length of the mango tree — and Gulli flew right beside her, home already.
