Free stories and worksheets you can use at home. Read one together in three minutes.
Welcome. This site has short English stories for children, and a free printable worksheet to go with each one. You can read a story with your child in two or three minutes. If they enjoy it, the worksheet gives them a little extra practice. That is the whole idea. Nothing to sign up for, nothing to buy.
How to use this site:
Pick a story. Go to the stories page or the top navigation and select the story category and choose the story to read. Your child can pick too, which usually works better than you choosing for them.
Read it together. Most stories take two to three minutes. Read aloud if your child is young. Let them read aloud to you if they are older.
Download the worksheet. Each story has a free printable worksheet below it. Print it or open it on a screen. Ten minutes is enough.
Why it is free
Every child deserves good reading material, no matter where they live or what their family can afford. A story should not sit behind a payment page. So everything here is free to read, free to print and free to share. There is no catch and no hidden plan you will be asked to buy later.
Tips for reading with your child
Read at the same time each day. Bedtime works well for most families. A habit is easier to keep than a plan.
Let your child choose the story. A story they picked themselves holds their attention longer, even if it is a little above their level.
Stop in the middle and ask, “What do you think happens next?” Their answer does not have to be right. Guessing keeps them thinking about the story.
If they do not like a story, skip it. There are plenty of others. Finishing a boring story teaches a child that reading is a chore.
Reading the same story twice is good. Children love repetition, and the second reading is when they notice the words.
One last thing. Your own English does not need to be perfect for this to help. Reading together, slowly, in your own accent, does more for your child than any worksheet. If a word is hard to explain in English, explain it in your own language. That does not undo the learning.
