The Small Gift: A Short English Story with a Moral Lesson on Gratitude

A young girl receiving a small gift from her tired mother
Reading Time: 2 minutes

Riya was a young girl who lived with her mother in a small town. Her mother worked very hard every day to take care of the family. Riya loved her mother, but she often complained about small things.

One evening, Riya saw her friend showing a new expensive toy. She felt unhappy and said, “I wish I had more things like this.”

That night, her mother came home late. She looked tired but smiled and gave Riya a small packet.

“I saw this and thought of you,” her mother said.

Riya opened the packet. Inside, there was a simple hair clip. It was not expensive, but it was chosen with care.

At first, Riya felt disappointed. She had expected something bigger. But then she looked at her mother’s tired face and gentle smile.

In that moment, Riya understood something important.

Her mother did not have much money, but she had still thought about her and brought a gift with love.

Riya hugged her mother and said, “Thank you. I love it.”

From that day, Riya stopped comparing her life with others. She learned to be happy with what she had.
