Long ago, in a peaceful Indian kingdom surrounded by green hills and mango orchards, there lived a king known for his unusual curiosity. He liked to observe how people behaved when no one was watching. One morning, he ordered his workers to place a huge boulder right in the middle of a busy road that connected the market to the village.
Then, dressed in simple clothes, the king hid behind a cluster of neem trees, ready to see what his people would do.
The first to arrive were wealthy traders returning from the city. Their silk robes swayed as they complained about the dust. When they saw the giant stone blocking the road, they frowned.
“This king does nothing for us,” one merchant said loudly.
“He cannot even keep the roads clean,” another added.
They walked around the boulder, annoyed but unwilling to touch it. Their servants followed, also avoiding the obstacle. None of them even paused to try moving it.
Later, a group of courtiers came riding on horses. They, too, stopped and stared at the stone. One of them clicked his tongue.
“What a nuisance! Someone should fix this,” he said.
“Yes, but not us,” another replied. “We have important matters to attend to.”
They took the long route around the rock and continued on their way, raising more dust.
The king watched quietly. Many people passed—traders, travelers, farmers—but not one person tried to remove the stone. Most complained. Some cursed their luck. Others simply ignored it.
Just when the king felt disappointed, a peasant appeared on the road. He wore simple cotton clothes and carried a heavy basket of vegetables on his back—brinjals, tomatoes, and long beans for the market.
When he saw the boulder, he did not complain. He did not blame anyone. Instead, he gently placed his basket on the ground and wiped his forehead.
“This stone will trouble someone else too,” he said softly. “Let me try.”
He pressed his shoulder against the boulder. It barely moved. He tried again, digging his feet into the earth. Sweat ran down his face, and his arms trembled. Birds flew overhead as he pushed with all his strength.
Finally, after many attempts, the boulder rolled to the side of the road with a loud thud.
The peasant smiled in relief. He picked up his basket—but then something caught his eye.
In the spot where the boulder had been, there lay a small leather purse. Curious, he opened it. His eyes widened. Inside was a pile of shiny gold coins and a small note written in neat handwriting.
The note read:
“This reward is for the one who cared enough to remove the obstacle. —Your King.”
The peasant stared at the letter, surprised and humbled. He bowed deeply toward the direction of the palace, not knowing the king stood only a few steps away, smiling behind a tree.
As the peasant walked away, the king whispered to himself:
“Today, my people learned that obstacles are not punishments—they are hidden opportunities for those who choose to act.”

Every obstacle carries a hidden opportunity, but only for those willing to face it.
