Tara's Falling Star Friend

Story

Every evening, Tara shone beside her best friend, a bright little star named Chiku, just three specks away.

They had shone together for as long as Tara could remember — the same corner of sky, night after night.

Then one evening, Chiku's light began to shimmer differently, brighter and faster than usual.

"Chiku, are you alright?" Tara asked.

"I feel like moving," Chiku said. "Like it's time."

Before Tara could ask what he meant, Chiku streaked across the sky in one long, glittering line — and was gone.

Tara stared at the empty patch of sky beside her. She waited. She blinked. But Chiku didn't come back.

"He's gone," she whispered, her own light growing dim and heavy. "My corner of sky feels so empty now."

The Moon rose slowly, and noticed her dimmer glow. "You're missing someone."

"Chiku just left. In one bright streak. Now there's nothing where he used to be."

"That's not quite true," the Moon said gently. "Falling stars don't vanish. They travel on, to light up a new corner of sky, somewhere that needed a little brightness of its own."

Tara looked at the dark patch beside her, and it didn't feel quite so empty anymore. "So he's still shining? Just somewhere else?"

"Just somewhere else," said the Moon. "And you're still shining right here, in the spot only you can fill."

Tara let her light grow warm and steady again. "I'll remember him. Even from here."

"That's exactly how it works," the Moon said. "Now rest, little star."

Goodnight, Tara. Goodnight, the friends whose light still shines, just somewhere else.
