The whole class knew about the shoes long before they understood the man wearing them.
Every morning at Vidya Deep School in Nagpur, Mr. Deshmukh walked into Class 5 in the same pair of old brown shoes. The leather had cracked near the toes, and one lace was tied in a small, tired knot.
Rohan noticed first. "Maybe he can't afford new ones," he whispered to Aarav, and laughed under his breath. A couple of boys nearby grinned along with him.

Mr. Deshmukh stayed back every evening that week, helping students who found English difficult. He explained hard words with small, everyday examples, and never once looked at the clock.
One evening Rohan came back for a notebook he had forgotten. He found Mr. Deshmukh alone in the classroom, wrapping old library books in brown paper so they could be used again.
"Sir, why are you doing this yourself?" Rohan asked.
"Because a book should outlast the child who first reads it," Mr. Deshmukh said, reaching for a roll of tape.
As he bent down, Rohan saw it — the sole of one shoe had been stitched back together by hand, the thread crooked but careful.
Rohan didn't say anything. He just walked home and sat with the thought for a long time.
The next morning, the principal made an announcement at assembly. "Class 5 met its Reading Week target because Mr. Deshmukh gave part of his own salary toward new library books."
The playground went still. Rohan looked down at his own shoes, then thought about the day he had laughed.
That afternoon, he gathered a few classmates. "Let's do something," he said. "Not shoes. Something he'd actually want."
Instead of collecting money, the class made a giant card. Every student wrote one line about something Mr. Deshmukh had taught them — not just spelling or grammar, but something about how to be.
On Friday, after the last bell, they handed it to him.
Mr. Deshmukh read every line slowly. When he looked up, his eyes were wet. "I'll keep this," he said, "for as long as I keep everything else."
On Monday, he walked in wearing the same old shoes.
Nobody looked at the cracks. They looked at the man who still chose to wear them.
